Has anyone here tried exit intent popups on mobile?
I understand how they work on desktop, but I’m not sure what actually works well on phones. Do you use scroll behavior, the back button, inactivity, or something else?
I’d love to hear whether they actually helped conversions or just annoyed people. Any real world experience or tool recommendations would be really helpful.
Short answer: yes, exit intent works on mobile but the trigger has to be different.
On desktop, exit intent watches the cursor heading for the tab bar or the X. Phones have no cursor, so that signal doesn’t exist. Popupsmart solves it by watching scroll direction and speed instead: when someone flicks upward fast, that’s usually a hand reaching for the back button or the address bar. That fast reverse scroll is the mobile equivalent of “I’m leaving.”
Two things to check in your setup:
- Turn the popup on for mobile devices — it’s a separate toggle, and this is the most common reason people think mobile exit intent “doesn’t work.”
- Give it something worth stopping for. The trigger only buys you a second of attention; the offer is what converts.
On the “does it help or just annoy” question honestly, both are possible, and it comes down to restraint rather than the technology:
- One offer, one popup. Don’t stack a newsletter form on top of a discount.
- Make the close button big and obvious. A tiny X on a phone screen is what people actually hate.
- Cap frequency so returning visitors aren’t hit every session.
- Don’t fire it in the first few seconds a fast scroll up right after landing is usually someone re-reading, not bouncing.
Also worth knowing: scroll-based detection is inherently fuzzier than cursor tracking, so expect a few false positives. That’s the trade-off with the mobile version.
Happy to walk you through the mobile exit-intent settings if you want to share what you’re offering.
